Learning Observed

Towards the end of Term 4, the learners in LH6 were invited to use https://www.tinkercad.com/ to design a waka which was an inaugural challenge organised by two learners from OJC.  Harry was keen to be part of this group; joining Aksh and Amolak to form a group to learn from each other and to collaboratively create their waka.

They began by creating a ‘sign in’ and following their curiosities by exploring the ‘Learn’ section to familiarise ourselves with the basics for using Tinkercad.  Harry was keen to follow some of the tutorials in the ‘learn’ section and needed the others in his team to stop from going straight to the design stage.  They quickly learned that they needed to support each other in the group to learn some basic skills if they were to be able to design a waka that met the requirements of the challenge.

Evidence of Learning

The learners were encouraged to make a diary entry of their learning at the end of each iExplore session.  Here are few pages from Harry’s diary:

It was pleasing to hear from Harry that he had been continuing his learning at home too!

The learners were making connections to their previous experiences with lego and designing.  They needed to use the internet to find out more about the waka and to also develop their capabilities in measurement to understand the difference between cm and mm when constructing their waka so that it met the challenge requirements.

Harry’s group were reasonably collaborative and helpful with each other, and demonstrated a growth mindset mentality.  The learners were developing capabilities with prototyping, spatial awareness and visual representations.
Next Learning Steps:

  • Practise using https://www.tinkercad.com/ to create new designs
  • Explore some designs made by other users of Tinkercad
  • Share this learning at home and make something together with a parent - or grandparent!

Joshua and Harry's 3D Printing Learning Story

Learners: Joshua & Harry     Learning Coach: T.Dillner            Date: 21.9.15 Learning Area: Technology - 3D Printing Learning Observed Joshua & Harry chose to participate in 3D Printing during iExperience during Week 7-10 this term. We initially learnt about the Thinker’s Key called ‘BAR’. BAR stands for Bigger, Add, Replace. To practise, the learners had to pick either a pen, lunch box or tennis racquet to make a feature bigger, add to the item and replace something. The learners had as much creative license as they needed and then they reflected on how functional the item had become - could it still be used for its original purpose? The next stage was to come up with an item that we use at school and repeat the BAR process. Joshua & Harry decided on creating a dice to use in a game. Joshua & Harry had to use the website TinkerCad to design their dice. They had to use the pre...
