Harry's iExplore Rock Learning Story

Learner: Harry L          Learning Coach: Bex Remington         Date: 1 April 2015
Learning Area: iExplore - Rocks
Learning Observed

One of the first activities the learners of Habitat 1 took part in was painting a rock that would be placed somewhere in the school grounds.  The rocks were painted and have been waiting for their placement.  Today we decided it was time to put the rocks in their place.  Harry was excited about finding somewhere for his rock.  The habitat chose to put them around the trees in our front garden.  When Harry took his rock out he wasn’t sure which tree to choose.  He asked me where he should put it and I told him the choice was completely his.  He finally chose to put his rock near his friends and in a place he could ‘still see it.’
Evidence of learning
These are pictures of Harry finding a space in the garden for his rock:

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Harry demonstrated the ability to relate to others as he created a social interaction around the rocks and chose to place his rock with his friends.  In his discussion with the learners around the tree they all decided together how the rocks would best be place and collaborated to action their plan.  Harry felt connected to his rock and was proud of having it displayed in the school garden.
Next Learning Steps

  • Bring family and friends to see his rock
  • Watch the tree he placed it under, grow over the next few years
  • Create another artefact that he could find a home for outside - either at school or home

Joshua and Harry's 3D Printing Learning Story

Learners: Joshua & Harry     Learning Coach: T.Dillner            Date: 21.9.15 Learning Area: Technology - 3D Printing Learning Observed Joshua & Harry chose to participate in 3D Printing during iExperience during Week 7-10 this term. We initially learnt about the Thinker’s Key called ‘BAR’. BAR stands for Bigger, Add, Replace. To practise, the learners had to pick either a pen, lunch box or tennis racquet to make a feature bigger, add to the item and replace something. The learners had as much creative license as they needed and then they reflected on how functional the item had become - could it still be used for its original purpose? The next stage was to come up with an item that we use at school and repeat the BAR process. Joshua & Harry decided on creating a dice to use in a game. Joshua & Harry had to use the website TinkerCad to design their dice. They had to use the pre...
